Is there something wrong with buying a dog on done deal??

There's nothing really wrong with it but it's completely unregulated, so you're never really sure what you're getting and where it's coming from. The dogs could be treated horribly and kept in poor conditions - the more that sell, the more this thing happens.

My opinion on DneDeal is approach with caution. If you are careful and don't lose the run of yourself, buying from here is fine. It will take quite a bit of work to sieve through the bad and good. Doing to research and making sure everything is legit, and up to standard, is your best guide to shopping there.

I wrote a rant on "what to do when buying a puppy" here ---> http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056001069 <--- if that's any help.

Buying a dog from anywhere that you don't do your homework on is wrong, be it a specialised breeder or a from an advert. Arm yourself with the knowledge of what to look for and if things don't stack walk away. Don't let yourself be swayed by a cute face, it's much better in the long run to get your dog from a reputable place than to put money in the pockets of those who don't have the welfare of their animals at heart but more their bank balance.

There are good and bad breeders advertising on donedeal. You just have to be careful when you go see the puppy. I've gotten animals from donedeal ads and the breeders were great. But I've contacted some people and they were obviously not good breeders.

Seen my pup on donedeal. Called the seller and was in his house 6 hours later. The pup was in good order, as was the mother. He had a Springer, Cocker and Newfoundland of his own and all were healthy and their kennels were spotless. His handling of his dogs was good and he took a lot of pride in how his dogs looked. He had all his vet’s paper work there for me to see along with the pedigree papers. My number and details were taken by him and has been in contact to see how the pup is doing.

Always be on your guard. For example a favourite trick of unscrupulous breeders & puppy farms is to use an accomplice. So you go to nice family home, see a bitch with pups & children etc. What you don't know is that the pups were bred elsewhere & then the "family" take them to sell - your hardly likely to go to the puppy farm. The bitch that is with the pups may not even be the mother. "Papers" are easily faked so never believe anything in writing until you have checked it.

Please consider that virtually any breed can be found in rescues as can puppies. Over 20,000 unwanted dogs will be killed this year.

i got my pup through done deal. Went to look at him the same day, seen both the parents and the people i got him from weren't breeders. Puppies were an accident and he simply wanted to rehome them. had all his vets papers and details provided to me, he even had a name already (needless to say we changed it!) love him to bits now!

Bought my last dog from DoneDeal, perfect service. Dog was kept in great health. All paper work was done. Mind you, me and my gf spent a long time looking around for the right puppy. Was worth it in the end

No experience with donedeal, but bought my retriever on Buy & Sell Dogs - came with all the papers, and he's a little scamp (in a good way).

Think it's all down to the individual seller really.

There are reputable people and cowboys on Donedeal.ie.
My advice is when you call them start of by saying "Hello, I am calling about the puppies you have for sale."
... Wait for their answer. If they go on to tell you about the breed of dog you have seen in the ad you should be ok. If they reply with "what puppies?" or "which ones?" HANG UP!

We recently got a Yorkie from Donedeal and I had to call about 3 or 4 people, using this method, before I got someone who had only one litter for sale.

Yes and also if you see an add you could copy the phone number and paste it into your google search engine. More often than not this same number will pop up in a few results. It is surprising (or maybe not) that many people are selling a few different breeds at once

Just checked this out - has anyone actually seen the sh1te thats advertised there?

I would have been against a breeding ban but after my round on this - for once I reckon something needs done - and right now

no, but like all internet forums its full of greedy/unscroupulous(?) people that will sell their own mothers for cash. if buying owt from done deal thread very carefully, imo.

One of the problems with Donedeal is that they have featured ads for pet foxes, "working dogs", "patterdales" etc. I do recall that following many complaints they have agreed to vet ads but I have heard further complaints.

UK magazines/sites operate a Christmas puppy ban in that they stop puppy ads in the run up to Christmas. Donedeal & most local Irish papers will not implement such a ban.

Anyone who wonders why we kill more dogs per capita than anyone else in Europe need only look at the huge number of puppies that are for sale.

I think the frequency with which new ads appear on the site - around one every 10 minutes - is very telling.

    Good tip, Wolfsberg!

Buying from Donedeal isn't bad, but like with any purchase of a dog, you need to do a lot of research and find out the right questions to ask, go to see the puppy with the mother, see what the conditions are like, see how the pups are being brought up.

Donedeal has some great genuine breeders advertising on it, but it has a lot of iffy bastards I wouldn't spit on if they were on fire ("Want to swap this dog for an Xbox, any takers?")

Thanks very much. To be honest my Dad has to take credit as he gave me the advice when I started driving to do the same thing when calling someone about a car in the Buy and Sell to see if they were a private seller or a dealer posing as one! I just used that advice for buying a dog to steer clear of "puppy farmers".

I used Done Deal to sell my lab puppies over the past few years and I got great owners from the ads. I hadn't visited in a while and having read this thread went to have a look and was astonished at the huge number of dogs now advertised on the site.

I used Wolfsberg's tip and found instances of multiple ads for differernt breeds advertised with the same phone number. The fact that most of the ads for the popular breeds (KCS and Yorkies, for example) have no email or landline details and in some cases, no contact name, seems a bit dodgy.

I used DoneDeal to find a breeder 3 years ago. I was looking for a fairly unusual breed, so I didn't expect to find a dog to take home that week. I found an ad that was about three months old, but the puppies were the nicest ones I had seen so far in my three month hunt for a breeder. I rang the breeder, who said that while that litter had been sold, they were expecting another litter from a different dog in about three months, one of whom i ended up buying.
One tip that I found particularly useful is, if you are buying a recognized breed, ring the Irish Kennel Club secretary for that breed and ask them about the breeder you are considering.* They may be able tell you whether or not the breeder is a reputable one. And of course, it's necessary to use common sense, know a lot about the breed before you attempt to buy one, look at the kennels where they're kept, how many dogs there are and how well they're groomed, how the breeder interacts with the dogs, how well socialized they are. Also, make sure the mother of the dog wasn't too young and wasn't forced to have a number of litters in a relatively short space of time.

we got our puppy on done deal and I googled the advertisers number. He was a farmer from Mayo and all that came up was a few pieces of farm equipment he had for sale on buy&sell so was happy enough! When we arrived at house the next day the 6puppies were playing in field with their young son and the bitch was working with farmer. We must have been chatting to them all for an hour lovely people.

As someone else said it's the individual sellers you need to weed out the bad ones.
You could also consider rescue dogs?
    Good luck with your search:)

I got my little one on Done deal, she is great. It was a random farmer, once off. I had looked and contacted soooo many people before i decided on her. She's a cross between a Pom and a Sheltie, she was so beautiful that i had to have her. I gave up on papers to have her pretty face. It was a gamble but it worked out in the end. :D

On the rescues i would always advise people to go for a rescue dog where possible. But i have to say it can be very frustrating with the paper work, home visits and then approval. I understand that this is very important to do to ensure genuine owners but it can be a bit much. A friend went through the application process with a rescue and after 3 weeks they hadnt even responded to her form, let alone set up any home visit. So can see why some people would become frustrated by this when they could have a dog the same day with done deal. (not saying that is right either tho :))

Dodgy? 4 different litters, various names, but the same mobile number.

    No donedeal links allowed.
