Hailing from London, experimental tribal noise trio Maria & The Mirrors make their Irish debut upstairs at Whelan's on October 19th. Comprising of two live drummers and a wall of electronics they harness the wild rhythmic unsensibilities of Liquid Liquid and Throbbing Gristle and end up somewhere between Factory Floor covering Tom Tom Club inside a collapsing building. This is going to be ****ing wild.

Bobby Krlic's debut album as The Haxan Cloak, which emerged in 2011 through Aurora Borealis, was far more intricate, carefully arranged and accomplished than your average debut. The Haxan Cloak was a set of eight dense, light-starved compositions that, as the project's name suggested, alluded to very British ideas of the occult. Its ragged string drones, groaning low-end and sunken choirs called to mind visions of sodden grey and green moorland, slate barrows and knackered old mining equipment, like a late autumn wander through some of the more isolated regions of the North of England.

In 2012, he released The Men Parted the Sea To Devour the Water, the first material served up since the announcement of his signing to Tri Angle. Interestingly, it’s a live session for Latitudes – an imprint set up by Southern Records and a re-interpretation of his previous work. Spectres of his productions remain; the beginning of the B-side is a large chunk of ‘Hounfour (Temple)’ from his captivating Observatory EP played lo-fi and heavy live (though the fidelity could just be my record, which has quite an impressive warp). There’s no sense that the music is just being directly translated into the live setting, instead the existing architecture is being acutely reassessed and revaluated to provide new angles with Krlic apparently looking at it as like remixing his own music.

"astonishing success, moulding elements of modern classical, dark ambient, doom metal, drone, industrial and dub-attuned electronic music into a unique hybrid form that demands to be taken very seriously indeed." - FACT MAG

"It can’t last though; ominous noise breaches the peace and hints at the darker realms of Haxan Cloak that could very well swallow you whole." - Sonic Router

"This album makes you ask: can fear and beauty coincide? But to find the answer, you have to walk that corridor for yourself." - The Line of Best Fit

Having just finished an EU tour supporting Liars and a number of dates with Laurel Halo, The Haxan Cloak comes to The Twisted Pepper, Dec 1st.

Expanding the blurb on this as it's my event :)

On Friday night 08th February, as part of Waterford New Music Week, I'll be performing music from my forthcoming live album 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' based around field recordings made in Berlin and performed at festivals and events around Europe over the last 2.5 years. Expect a mix of urban sounds and spacey ambient electronic music. Should be finished by 20:30.

    All welcome and free.

NeXus Arts presents: The Sleep Concert - by Steven Stapleton aka NURSE WITH WOUND
As part of DROGHEDA ARTS FESTIVAL 2014

    A bed-and-breakfast concert!
    An absurd idea? Maybe?
    A unique experience? Definitely!

    Steven-Stapleton-Ear-web-885x1024.jpg

Nexus Arts is incredibly excited to host the Irish premiere of the legendary ’NURSE WITH WOUND’ maestro Steven Stapleton's ‘The Sleep Concert’. Stapleton will perform his dark ambient music live throughout the night manipulating and re-animating his own Nurse with Wounds records to colour and shape your dreams in an avant – DJ somniloquy. This will be accompanied by large film projections which will enhance the experience. The audience will be asked to sleep over for the duration of the concert.
Participants will receive a single air bed, a blanket, a breakfast plus travel to and from the event.
This collective sleepover will be hosted in a stunning and exclusive secret location in the vicinity of Drogheda. This truly unique experience is of limited capacity.

Steven’s only request for his performance is that ‘He'd greatly appreciate it if the audience could snore in tune."

    Alex Petcu-Colan, percussion

The National Concert Hall is delighted to announce Alex Petcu-Colan as its Rising Star for 2015.

Playing over 50,000 notes on more than 80 instruments, Alex Petcu-Colan takes us on a journey through time and space with some of the most colourful and thrilling music composed for percussion.

Joined by his sister Ioana Petcu-Colan (violin), and friends Chris Stynes, Maeve O'Hara and Caitriona Frost (percussion), the programme includes Donnacha Dennehy's energetic Paddy and Xenakis's powerful Psappha to a transcription of Debussy's elegant Arabesque No.1 and Karl "Amadeus" Menke's theatrical Eine Kleine Tischmusik.

An Irish musician of Romanian origin, Alex is quickly establishing himself both nationally and internationally as a percussionist of the finest calibre. One of the few Irish percussionists to focus on solo and chamber music, Alex has championed and developed the existing repertoire by giving numerous recitals and working closely with composers.
