External wall insulation

    Hi all,

I hope this is the right place for this, if not, apologies.

I bought a house about 8 years ago, second hand. It is about 35 years old and as you can imagine its energy rating would not be that good. I was looking to insulate it better and have done the attic myself. However I would also like to do the walls. Now as the house is not that big I do not want to loose any area on the inside so am thinking about insulating the external walls.

    Has any one done this?
What is the average width that is added to the outside wall? I ask this as we have small enough side passage where we can bring our bins out and the lawn mower etc. and I do not want to make that too small either.
Finally, costs. What does it cost, I guess every house is different but a square meter or something?

    Thanks.

Thickness will be a fn of the U value of the material used and the level of improvement required.

50/60mm thickness is one version I have seen.

20k is a good number to have in mind for an average house, with the acrylic finish accounting for a lot of the cost

Cost prohibitive in Ireland I am afraid, a very specialist type of undertaking, in so much as finding a tradesmen familiar with the process, it is very common in Europe and is not difficult to install, I have done alot of this myself but would not even know where to look for sourceing materials so never consider marketing this service in in Ireland.

At 35 years old I assume it is cavity construction but uninsulated.
If you had pumped insulation like whitewool mineral fibre at 100mm, this according to the manufacturers spec will give you a u value of 0.34 and at an estimate from my installer would cost around €11 per sq mtr, internal drylining would give a value of aprox 0.44.
Your walls will have a present value of around 1.78.

Of course the lower the better

    hi there,
open ur esb box or gas box on the side of the house and see if theres a hole in either that you can look in to see what type of cavity construction you have.if it is cavity then you could pump it with insulation.if is cavity block then you have no option but to externally insulate.there are companys out there that tell you that they can insulate cavity block, they are conmen, this type of insulation is useless.

with regards to external insulation, you would be putting on approx 80mm to the exterior walls of you home so you should still have room to use the passage.there are grants coming on stream in march to help with the cost of this.

    Re: Existing House Grants
Question put to me (over a pint)
Q 1. Can a person insulate their living room only and add some controls etc to their heatng system or does one have to insulate the entire house and fit entire control system to the heating?
Q 2. Can part improvements be done and another grant received again for further improvements of a similar nature within say 6-12 months or any length of time?

I recently got an extension with a 100mm outer leaf 50m insulation and an inner leaf of 100m with the inside walls rendered and skimmed. The outside walls of the original house I got 50m insulating boards on the inside, because I know the house was built with 9inch blocks on their flat. Would it be wise to get the extension cavity between the leafs with that pumped insulation? What type is the best?
