Pope denouncing IVF treatment

Honestly I cant believe anyone in this country is catholic. This outdated doctrine has no place in society anymore. A celibate man giving advice on marriage and having kids sounds a bit hypocritical right? Telling couples who turn to IVF treatment for conception are arrogant and should turn to god to help them. Funny because that the last time I heard Jesus was supposedly conceived by artificial means.

It is a treatable medical condition. If it is wrong on religious grounds to treat this condition what other conditions are also objectionable?

This is the worst thing I've heard that man utter in quite some time

The Pope really is an asshole.

But with IVF, a man doesn't have to insert his dirty pee-pee into the woman! It's a brave new world where sex is no longer a necessary evil for procreation.

    Exactly.

There's nothing for them to feel guilty about. The church can't control that. That's why they're against it.

"Don't use condoms, it'll stop you from getting pregnant"

"Don't use IVF, it'll help you get pregnant"

"Don't have abortions, it'll kill your baby"

"Don't use condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, it'll help you and your babies live longer"

    What a f*cking idiot....

As much as people complain about the current trend of church bashing in the media and politics, this current pope is his own worst enemy.

Wonder if the pope has a list of things that he feels that he should have an opinion on and just makes it up on the spot. 'Hmmm, Pokémon.... Satans Minions! That should work.' But in all seriousness, these sorts of opinions that he airs are cruel ,there are people who can't conceive and actually take his opinions seriously.

She was being sarcastic, implying that the pope's views were as absurd as Onion stories. :D The Catholic news quote is rather funny though “We are playing with very strong natural forces which we think we can control but cannot,” explained Furton." An image of giving birth to a child with supernatural powers just came into my mind. Perhaps God used IVF on Mary hence the superpowers... And they merely don't what us to discover IVF's full potential. :D Okay, I apologise for entering the absurd territory....

    @Corkfeen
I just thought I had better back it up because all too often news sites take stories from poor sources.

The popes' supporters seem to be in the minority on thejournal.ie

    Stolen comment from above site:
As an atheist I love the pope. He argues the case against religion better than I ever could.

Pope Benedict also restated the Catholic Church's opposition to IVF, and added that it should only welcome reproductive assistance if it 'facilitates' sexual activity between a couple.
    - From Daily Blaa's source here

Surely under this logic, of no IVF but viagra is ok because it 'facilitates' sex, doesn't that then mean that I could set up a CC sanctioned fertility practice, where the prescriptions are porn, porn, PORN and lot's of it?

I just don't get why he, man who doesn't have sex, doesn't have a wife, doesn't (presumably because of the lack of humping) have fertility problems, gets to decide what is and isn't ok.

Thought the whole point of marriage under the CC was to procreate? Isn't that why the same sex marriage issue is such a hot button?

    Stupid pointy hat man.

They tried working with what "God gave them", it didn't work out so some people sought help via IVF. Sounds like Benny with the Magic Hat is upset that science is helping people conceive when God had decided otherwise.

If you can read this, you're too close!

Another case of God giving us free will and the church condemning people's rights to use it. Who is really going against God's wishes? The people (pretty sure "Don't have IVF treatment" wasn't the 11th Commandment), or The Catholic Church ("Do what we tell you to do even though it's really your choice")?

I read an article in the Irish Catholic a few years ago about the Church's view on IVF, and one of their objections was that the male partner had to masturbate in order to provide his semen sample. That's how bloody petty they are.

(In fairness, there are other ways of doing it, but who in their right mind would choose a testicular biopsy over the more obvious method, unless it was a medical necessity?)

One has to wonder; If the pope was required to supply a semen sample for a medical test, would he go for a testicular biopsy, or "Eh...*cough*...just gimme ten minutes lads, I'll go to loo and sort it mysefl".

Well, he's 85. I'd imagine the biopsy is his only option, given how out of practice he is -- assuming he's out of practice.

considering the original Onan objection was about him doing it to avoid knocking up his dead brother's widow, that seems completely to miss the bloody point of doing it - TO impregnate their wife

Interesting side note to wonder about what, in the unlikely event that Benny had to produce a semen sample for any reason, would he use to ..... ahem....help the process along. I understand that in fertility clinics there are adult magazines to aid the production of the required sample. I'll ignore the obvious but crude temptation to mention anything to do with....well,....you know what, and suggest publications such as.....Sisters without their Wimples,.....Nuns in the Nip.....Monstrous Monstances (bit of a reach that one).

Yeah, they should just accept that God doesn't think they deserve children and just should just suck it up.
