Being Human (US) *SPOILERS*

    #1

This thread will be to discuss the upcoming American version of Being Human, which will broadcast on the 17th of January, so we can keep the discussions of Season 3 (UK) and Season 1 (US) separate.

When the first episode airs on the 17th, there will be spoilers in this thread

What are people's opinions on how this will turn out? It is already only on 4.3/10 on their IMDB page. I personally think that the trailer looks absolutely ridiculous!

No.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no.. no..

.. as you can see, I'm a tad against the idea.

Especially a production by Sci-Fi.. was their latest TV movie effort "Duck Vs Cyberswan" delayed to make room for this?

I'll watch it, but fully expect to despise everything about it. I'll try and keep an open mind.

  • This is going to sound like a strange complaint, but the cast are far too good looking in the American version. Also when the guy says, "I'm different" he sounds like an emo weedy git.

This is the trailer for Being Human that was screened on BBC America - it's amazing how different they seem! The US trailer makes it seem light hearted, but this one.. shows just how dark it is

Yeah, apart from Big Ears and his fancy-lady (I've only seen Series 1) I would have thought the original cast were pretty damn good-looking. I'm still not utterly convinced by the UK version so I really can't imagine myself watching the remake.

The thing is that he can actually act. That's the difference - I'm trying to withhold judgement until I actually see it but, from looking at the footage in the trailer, they're all wooden planks.

I think what Ari Thousands Freight means is that the three in the US remake all look like models..

.. whereas the UK version - they all look relatively normal.. not "plain janes" but not absolute stunners either (Russell Tovey especially).

Thank you, that's what I meant.

There is no remake currently, y'hear. None. Only the UK version.

Kicks off tomorrow, Monday, on Sy-Fy.

  • God, I had conveniently erased this from my memory. Thanks for reminding me *cough* :p

  • Watching this now and... God, it's living up to my expectations so far. The opening was terrible.. Annie's mononlogue at the start of the UK one was wonderful and set up the characters brilliantly. And so far it seems to be a shot-for-shot remake (the bit in the hospital where Mitchell.. now just Aidan.. tells them the hospital was off limits). And I was right in thinking they were going to use CGI for a lot of things, namely George's transformation. Also now the vampires seem to possess the ability to move extraordinarily fast (in the way of True Blood). Also - George and Mitchell are now nurses and not janitors.

Why, oh why, did they need to show Annie appearing and reappearing? We know she's a ghost.

And now Annie has become Sally.

Instead of Annie.. Sally.. whatever dying by falling down the stairs, she dies in bed? So we're told.

So. George is Josh. Mitchell is Aidan. And Annie is Sally. Heinrich is now Bishop and he appears to be a Jedi.

Instead of Annie watching George's transformation, thus sealing their friendship and closeness, it's George's sister. God, the beginning of the transformation was so terrible.

Well, it's over now and.. it ends on a cliff hanger, not even an interesting cliff hanger. This is .. so so disappointing compared to the original!

    Pro's:
    - Sam Huntington (Josh / "nu-George") is decent - he's the best by far of the bland leads.
    - Mark Pellegrino (Bishop / "nu-Herrick") is a cracking actor.. but don't know how right he is for that role. We'll see in time.. he certainly looks a lot younger than Adrian Lester (Herrick) but only 4 years in the difference suprisingly.
    - At least they're slightly going off the path of the UK series.. and not doing a direct lift of the pilot. Though these "changes" were not for the better.

    Cons:
    - Everything else unfortunately!

I suppose if you had watched it never having seen the original, it'd be a step above a lot of Sci-Fi's efforts as of late. But it's just uncomparable to the UK series so far.

I haven't checked out the ratings but I'd be suprised if it did well, and I can't see it being embraced in the US.. but I've been wrong before.

EDIT: It did do well actually.. very well!

Just finished watching it, pretty damn good!....first SyFy show in ages i've actually liked!, it was quite dark but had plenty of humour. For the most paart well acted and the script was fairly decent.

I've not seen the UK one so i can't compare.....but the US one i liked from the first ep. - there is more then enough going on for me to want to see the next ep. Based on ratings and net buzz i think this could build over time for Syfy...potential hit on their hands.

The Vampire angle alone may gather more females and Twitter action over time as yer man looks alot like Robert Pattison....they go mad for pale and rather ill looking scrawny hot boys.

So yeah, i'm in for now.

    My point exactly! ;)

  • Richard I strongly recommend you to watch the original British first episode. It shows you exactly how dark the show should be.

Second ep. was very strong also, i'm really lking this new vamp Aiden turned, hot redhead Rebecca, she was pretty darn good!....this chick is pretty hardcore and super pissed at Aiden, really liking this show so far....think i just prefer the US version, UK version is just too "UK" + low production values, besides i think the US characters are more interesting.

It's doing very well in the ratings, increased on last week + the female demo shot up....guess Aiden is bringing in the Twilight fans :-)

Being Human and Twilight should never be mentioned in the same sentence.

besides i think the US characters are more interesting.

No, that's simply not true. They are air-brushed copies of the UK ones, but like any air-brushed copy, it's not quite right.

I didn't hate it like I thought I would from watching the previews. The CGI is over done, and the over emphasis that Sally is a ghost is really not necessary. The story is almost identical to the UK one, with just a few minor changes. I'd rather they made a completely different show, rather than this slightly touched up remake. I keep waiting for the bit where Annie, Mitchell or George did something, and seeing how the new character will do it, or in what way it will have slightly changed.

Sally re-creating her fall down the stairs was just, awful. There aren't words to describe how bad and pointless that was.

It's not actually that bad if you look at it on it's own merit, but it's still a poor copy.

Warning, if you haven't seen the UK version, don't read this bit.
I can't help but wonder if they'll have Sally killed by her fiancée. I though she was going to twig it when she was throwing herself down the stairs in that truly awful slow-mo scene. I also thought that Josh's sister would see him change, and not be able to handle it, so would leave (leaving Josh thinking his sister hated what he had become), but they decided to hide it from her instead. The bit with Aidan's conquest being turned was a carbon copy of the UK one, right down to her killing someone outside of the pub, and Aidan refusing to turn her too.

Making it "more like Twilight" is a bad thing. At least Aidan doesn't sparkle.

  • Richard, I urge you to start watching Being Human UK from the very beginning - then you'll see why the American version doesn't deserve to even carry the same name.

Just finished the pilot, having never seen the UK version & with nothing to compare to I have to say I kinda enjoyed it.

You'd probably enjoy the US one more if you haven't seen the UK one, but the UK one (although better) will look lower budget after the US one. All depends on whether you prefer good story, characters, etc, or flashy lights and bling :pac:

I thought that's why they had the whole
    "problem with the plumbing"
in the US one. It would be an exact copy of the UK one then.

Ep. 4 was very good as well, loving the Aiden/Rebecca dynamic....jesus that girl is HOT!

Sitting in the resturant, mouth open, gasping for blood! :D
Show has really grown on me, it's got a good balance of humour, characters and a dash of gore.

The music in this weeks ep. was awesome!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Latest ep. was pretty good with a few nice reveals, Sally remembered who killed her, and yes it was the same as the UK version, when was it revealed it was the fiance in the UK?....the reveal seemed pretty quick in the US.

Josh found out who turned him, Aiden met Chaplin and Bishop seemed to "take care" of him, it was implied Chaplin was killed, Aiden knocked out his teeth/suckers so he could no longer feed.

Still keeping my interest and it's hitting all the right spots for me thus far.

Vampire porn/snuff movie???....Rebecca is all sorts of awesome!!!!, she is super hot and makes a great vampire vixen!, i think the relationship between her and Aiden is excellent, it's twisted and makes for great viewing!

Sally met a new ghost and her powers continue to develop, Josh got some sexy time with Kristen Hager.....but i suspect alot of these love interests are gonna have a bloody ending.

    Really enjoying the show.

I've watched up to Ep 9 now, it's gotten fairly dark (though, not having seen the UK version, I've no frame of reference). Mark Pellegrino plays a good baddie, for sure :)

Yeah, Bishop and Marcus killing the bullies was bad....dunno what happened to Rebecca, she looked way hotter in earlier eps. - she looks much older now?

I really like the show, in fact i'm hooked!......my only issue is i think they need to have more mythology and backstories, have a more seralised approach, get some arc and story going besides just "being human".

Lovin' the drunken blood lust of Aiden, i like Josh and Sally also.

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!....renewed for season 2!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Rebecca turned the kid and that Marcus killed the two bullies, making it look like the kid had done it. I must re-watch the last few mins of Ep 9.
