Is it really bad this year or what i woke up with it one morning.

I not a bad sufferer and can get away from it. but by christ is it strong or what this summer.

Luckly i have expensive tablets in the press. Zeirtek no longer work for me:(
But one of these and i seem to be grand. I just went into the pharmacy some time last year said give me the strongest you got. she was giving me Zertek but i said there useless. so she gave me a small box. 24 tablets €10 seem to do the job.

One a day keeps the hayfever away :D

Is there anything a 14 month old can take for hay fever? His eyes are all puffed up, and hes pretty miserable. I'm using Karvol and a hepa filter to try to make the house as pollen friendly as possible- but its not working. I've given up trying to use Nasosal on him- spending an hour struggling with a baby who doesn't want salt up their nose isn't my favourite past time....... Any advice appreciated.

Talking to your GP is your best bet with a kid that young. There'll be almost nothing over the counter for under 3's.

Vaseline underneath the nostrils and just below the eyes helps to trap pollen. Drying clothes / bedclothes indoors so they don't collect pollen . . At that age, avoidance is really the best option.

I know that Zirtec is licenced for use in infants. . my daughter was on it from about the age of 2 . . but it think it has to be prescribed by GP.

Yes, had Zirtek in liquid form for my kids when smaller. Can't remember whether we needed prescription.

Karvol, which is being used already also good.

See your GP but Phenergan is also a possibility, not sure what age its suitable from though. Also it can make them drowsy so not sure if it would be suitable. Definitely think a trip to an allergy specialist would be a good idea for your little one. I went to the Slievemore Clinic and he deals with very small children and everything. Sorry he's in Dublin but people travel from all over the country to see him - Dr. Paul Carson. The clinic has a website which explains everything.

My Hayfever is really bad right with the last few days and my nose it totally conjested am totally hating it, I escaped the worst of it last year by escaping down under to Oz for a piece of the summer (their winter) and only for Otrivine I'd be gone gaga as my nose gets totally blocked and I can breath through it. I'm using a roll of jacks paper every two days with sneezing and blowing litres of snots.

I'm not sure if this has been asked here already but is it possible to develop hayfever when you've never had it before?

This summer I'm not sure if I have developed hayfever or have a very persistent annoying cold that appears and disappears randomly!

Hayfever is an over reaction by your immune system. Yes- you can develop hayfever- depending on a lot of different factors, not least your overall well being. Some years I don't get hayfever at all- I even had a 10 year stretch where I didn't get it- other years, out of the blue my eyes will bulge up and my sinus clamp shut- for months on end........ This year in particular- the pollen is probably at its highest level in the past 5-6 years (and oddly enough other than the odd bad day- I'm just fine- my 15 month old son however is suffering badly with it...........)

I used to never get hay fever but suffered from heat rashes when I was young and now I suffer from both. :(

    Pollen count is high today.

On really bad days- go to Dunlaoghaire or some coastal area- the pollen count tends to be much much lower at the coast- and highest in the midlands........

I'm in Dublin at the moment but don't know how to get from one end to the other never mind getting to Dunlaoghaire!

If it keeps up, I'll head to Salthill sometime during the week. I actually just took a shower in the hotel to see if it would help.

I'm crippled. my eyes feel like they have conjunctivitis, my mouth hurts from the itch, my nose is raw sore from blowing it and then it's completely congested at night time and I'm fed up sneezing. :(

This summer has been really bad. Can barely leave the house. I'm on the neoclaritin and drops and nasal spray, doing the whole vaseline thing, but no relief. Same thing every year. My doctor has run out of things to give me i think! My friends are trying to get me to go to some kind of witch doctor quack to try some alternative nonsense at this stage.

Along killiney & dalkey it can be bad enough though, loads of plants & trees about. I expect the pier would be good.

Hey guys, after 26 years I've now got hayfever I think. My sinuses are usually a nightmare. Been dying with them for weeks, got antibiotics to shift it. Did work initially but my nose is still running & my sinuses blocked. I have bad headaches as well during the day which are a nightmare, black lids under my eyes consistently. Are headaches usually a symptom? This sound familiar? I'm now taking antihistemins & a nasal spray, hopefully will help me out

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭SlimCi

Yep sounds like allergies to me. My doc called the dark circles under the eyes "allergy shiners". The ent recommended sinurinse nasal wash which can be bought over the counter in the chemist, I find it clears the gunk out of the sinuses (tmi sorry). I have allergic rhinitis and developed asthma in the last five years so am on asthma inhaler, singulair tablet, nasal spray, nasal rinse, and antihistamines. But to be honest I'm not doing too badly at the moment. Using the nasal rinse every day morning and evening and not suffering too much.

Draw in through each nostril a solution of warm water with a little salt in it.The idea being to wash out the the channels where the bacteria multiply.Try it each night for a few days and notice the result. It worked for me and i never bothered again with over the counter stuff that the doctor had me on.I had this problem for years and i don't even need the rinses anymore but i hav'nt a clue what it was exactly i'm really guessing it was bacteria.Give it a try costs nothing.

without reading any of this thread the single best thing someone can do is not to go outside early morning or late evening, if possible.....

Quick question about hay fever. I have it, and it gets pretty bad when there's a high pollen count - I can barely keep my eyes open from the water and stinging, my nostrils swell and I can't stop sneezing. Zirtek works really well for me, clears it up relatively quickly (although I usually have to sleep for a while after I take it in order to get the full effect, don't know why).

However, I have noticed that I get very hay fever-like symptoms when I'm around a lot of animals. I own animals myself - two dogs and a cat - and I'm never bothered with it around them. However, a friend of mine has loads of cats (about six) and any time I go to her house, my hay fever seems to get really, really bad. I don't think I have an allergic reaction to cats (I've always been around cats for as long as I can remember, and I've never been bothered with it before), it just seems to be recently. I'll be fine all day, with no symptoms, and then I walk into her house and after about a half an hour, I start sneezing, and it doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. Do you think maybe I've developed some allergic reaction to cats? Would I have the same symptoms as my hay fever ones if I was?

Its not necessary the cats themselves- in weather like this- its highly possible that there could be significant dust particulate present- I have a hepa air filter here- even in a room that smells nice and fresh- it gets clogged up in 3-4 hours.....

I don't get hayfever every year- I've had a reasonable run without symptoms- but this year is just something else altogether. I don't have a solution- other than using air filters at home and delibertly avoiding dusty situations, but I wake up most mornings, sinus totally closed, and often with congealed puss keeping my eyelids locked closed- its really not funny. Unfortunately our 15 month old son has inherited this from me- poor kid......

I am so pleased to have discovered this thread. I never suffered hayfever until this year.
My face, neck and eyes tingle the whole time which is relieved by scratching. My eyes are puffy the whole time and developed lots of wrinkles, I feel like I've aged 10 years!

My GP prescribed Telfast, and I've tried Piriton, Clareeze and Zirtek which were ok for a while but I believe I built up immunity to them.

I have to take painkillers to take away the tingly feeling so I can sleep at night. And I have to keep drops in my eyes to stop them feeling like there's glass in them.

I can't wear moisturizer or make-up as they irritate my skin, the Summer holidays were a nightmare with the suncream "scalding" my eyes!

I went on steroids, then got a steroid injection - BUT IT'S STILL THERE!

Anyway, the pollen count should be diminishing soon, shouldn't it?

    I hope so :(:(:(
Given the way our climate seems to be buggered up though- who knows.......

I'm on Neoclarityn now myself- I found the steroid injections pretty useless (and I have to get a steroid injection every Friday when I get my iron transfusions- so I guess I'm actually immune to it )

Get a good Hepa filter for the house, and replace your air filters in the car frequently- I'm Mick's Garage's best customer :p

I really don't know to be honest- its totally ridiculous this year.......

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭BengaLover

The Kenalog injection was by far the best ive ever had, no symptoms at all, but GP has discouraged using it as its a steroid.
I now use Xyzal, brilliant altogether, also Rhinozal.
Also nettle tea helps a lot.
Find its worse on days when its rained!

Anyone else still suffering somewhat? I never had hayfever til this year. I suffer with a runny nose and stuffed up feeling in the front of my face. I've been taking Flixonaise and Zirtek which are great but how much longer does it go on for typically??

I'm still suffering and, like you, I never had it before. I can honestly say it has ruined my Summer. I'm still scratching my eyes out, the skin around them is so sore. I've tried everything, I'm just using Telfast or Zirtek every night to help me sleep.

I really thought it would be gone by now. How are the other sufferers on this forum?

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭SlimCi

I'm doing ok actually, surprisingly. Fair bit of nasal congestion as usual but nothing too annoying etc. My eyes have itched alright for the last couple of days, so there must be something about alright:mad:
