Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    A friendly place for folks who enjoy reading and socialising in Cork.

    Anyone who's interested in joining an informal group of readers for a banter about books then show your faces here or on the Facebook group "Cork Readers".

    I will be mailing interested parties in due course with details of where/when. This will be a city centre location, on a week-night when places are generally quieter and more condusive to conversation.

    PM to some mod to make that thread sticky instead of the cork book club one. Maybe add book club to title somehow as well.
    When writing to mod, refer to the last few pages of original cork book club thread where the decision to start new "clean" page was made.

    I would certainly join in anytime when i have evening off, will PM with details.

    How about deciding the main book for first meeting that we all should read, to get the discussion started?

    Could not find the facebook page for "Cork Readers", is it up yet?

    Initial discussion of what we're currently reading / last read / which genres we like reading would certainly be useful - but I think we'd need a discussion to choose a first group read - anyone is welcome to put forward suggestions - to open the topic.

    The Group is showing as active - but they've been fiddling with things [again] over there - click on the 'GROUPS' link, then do a search for Cork Readers.

    Hiya there everyone,

    I've booked our first meeting place for 8pm on Wednesday 12th October 2011.

    Get in touch to let me know if you're attending or not. I will forward my mobile number and venue details.

    I will leave a copy of John Connolly's "The Black Angel" on the table so you will spot me.

    This will be an informal gathering so we can get to know who's who and start a discussion about how we wish to progress and what we want to set as the first reading material.

    Did u write to any of the mods explaining them why they should make that thread "sticky" instead of original coek book club thread? Otherwise it keeps getting lost in all the threads and people still go to cork book club thread that is dead...

    When I lived in Kosovo there was a great book club that you could read any book for, and then in the meetings we all got together and did a little book review. It was a great way to find out about books that you may not have heard about. All too often the ones book clubs pick are a sort of keep everyone happy kind of thing. And also, with the other method you're hearing about a book from someone who has a copy and has finished reading it!

    If anyone would be interested in this kinna thing, maybe we could try it out? I'm not much of a fiction reader so wouldn't be going to a regular book club.

    That's exactly how our meetings go - we chat about books in general - see who likes what, what we're reading presently and what we'd like to give a go at next. It's a social group for readers - and, Yes, we do pick a 'group read' - but the fun of the meetings is the social side - we're not just analysing the book of the month.

    We chose "1984" for the February read - as everyone wanted - for their own reasons - to get into it.

    Dory that idea sounds great, haven't heard of that kindof book club before. I like reading non fiction books like about peoples travels, lives and that sort of thing & it mightn't be a book anyone else would be interested in, so something like that sounds good!
