I really hope someone can help. For the last year I have had really stubborn thrush that wont go away. It can be really sore and because of that when I have sex with my BF its not long before it becomes uncomfortable and we have to stop. Its really frustrating and really getting me down.

I have tried the usual, Acidophilus, Diflukin and Cream. I don't eat any yeast products and rarely eat sugar or drink beer. But nothing works. The doctors I have been to don't take it seriously or understand how it is getting me down.

Dr: Take 1 strength of Diflukin. Bye

Me: Didn't work, it never works.

Dr: Take 10 strength of Diflukin. Bye

I am really tired of it. Please any suggestions are welcome.

Are you sure it's just thrush? As yeast overgrowths go it should have cleared up within weeks. You might have a more serious complaint that is only manifestin itself in the vaginal area. This is 90% treated by a dietary re-jig. Your doctor should be informed of its persistence and asked to recommend further treatment. Btw - acidophilus goes off very quickly if not kept refridgerated, and hence is useless. Common treatments for this very common ailment include switching to a vegetable/juice only diet for 4 weeks, duration depends on the severity of the symptoms, have you been retaining water, feeling apathetic, gaining weight, suffering from unexpected emoptional outbursts, feeling slightly depressed, stomach cramps, eye puffiness, sinus blockages, sudden migraines etc?

has you BF been treated for he may have it too and is only reinfecting you.

Plus getting rid off all your pants/knickers and his boxer shorts and boil washing the bed linen,
from an aromatherphy point of view and if you are not allerigic to teatree oil add a few drops to a tampon ect.

It could be more then just trush if you have been trying to combat this for a year now, it could be your bodys yeasts are out of synch completely, if your GPs are writing you off try on more time and give them hell tell them you want a referal to a GYN and that you want a copy of your med files and ALL treatments for the last year.

I was about to say the exact same thing.
A lot of men retain thrush in their mouths and never know about it. In alot of cases it can go back as far as his birth. lots of babies contract oral thrush in the birth canal, and also if he has ever been treated with huge amounts of Anti-biotics at any one time, sometimes that can also cause thrush.

Ask him to have it checked out.

In addition, acidophilous is very effective, sometimes, depending on the individual, you may need double the recommended dosage.

    Good Luck.

CANESTEN PESSARY... 500 mg plus the cream works a treat for me, and I am very prone to thrush infections!

It could be that Diflucan doesn't work with your body. We are all different.

With your persistent problem, you might need to use a pessary two nights. Get one combi pack (pessary and cream) and one with pessary only. Expensive, but EFFECTIVE! Available over-the-counter at chemist.

Daktarin cream also works well (but not at same time as Canesten cream. Use one or the other.)

RINSE area with warm water and vinegar solution (about 2dessert spoons to 2 teacups water). Do this everytime you use toilet (whenever possible). Apply cream after drying area.

AVOID SOAP in the area, unless absolutely necessary. Use vinegar solution EVERYTIME you use soap to return area to proper pH (it's pH out of balance that encourages yeast overgrowth).

B-complex vitamins taken two or three times a day while you are trying to get rid of it, and anytime you take an antibiotic. My doctor told me about this, and I've not gotten thrush again while taking an antibiotic.

Have b/f rinse with vinegar solution before and after sex to avoid re-infection while you are trying to get rid of it.

Wear cotton knickers - at least while you're trying to get rid of this bout. Where practical, wear no knickers, and wear loose clothing to allow air to circulate. When we wear tight things, it traps moisture and warmth- climate for overgrowth.

Yeast is normal and healthy in the body; it's just when conditions are favourable for overgrowth that it causes us the difficulty.

    Good luck!

Sorry if anything I posted offended you, Billy.
Yes, it is a very painful thing, and can get serious if untreated.

Since I'm a woman and have suffered from it many times over the years (I am not a teenager), I think I might know a bit more about it than you do.

Fed up is entitled to whatever valid information she can get. If you think I posted something misleading, dangerous, or incorrect, please correct it specifically rather than just calling me a "muppet." Maybe you should do some investigating "before you post stuff like this."

    Thank you

Sorry but, eeeewwwwww. How come noone else was shocked as I to hear this??

Is this eradicated with vinegar(which is great for most afflictions to skin and stuff), or is there something else???

How would I know if I had it or not, (in my mouth)???

i guess you'll be even more shocked to hear yuo can get it on your old man too won't you?

i caught thrush off the first girl i was ever with, and it's the quickest way to leant the importance of using condoms i can tell you.

imagine having cracked lips, but on your foreskin. very sensitive to everything including urine, and can persist for weeks if not treated correctly.

its also something people with aids get quite reguarly towards the end (my cousin had it).

some live youghart on a tampon can help relieve it also (another ex girlfriend). and drink plenty of cranberry juice.

Fed Up, I'm worried that what you have is more than 'simple' thrush. It's very persistence and the symptoms you describe lead me to believe you could have a serious yeast overgrowth throughout the body. This is common enough so don't start reaching for the sleeping pills just yet. Very few doctors in Ireland can treat Candida Albicans well at all. Your GP may not be of a lot of use unfortunately. There are however many hundreds of websites out there relating specifically to this form of bacterial yeast overgrowth and there are many very simple dietary changes you can make to alleviate the symptoms. Depending on the severity of your condition it may be necessary to go on a juice-and-vegetable-only diet for a period of between 4 and 26 weeks. Dietary detox is the only proven method for helping this problem. You need to recreate the balance between the good and bad bacteria in your system. Over time with a very strict diet you will starve the candida strain of its food source - which is [unsurprisingly] sugar. All carbs breakdown into sugars and this is why you have to curtail if not eradicate this element of your diet.

However, this should be taken in conjunction with medical advice, as one of the major downsides of the vegetable-only diet is a rapid reduction in body weight, which needs to managed very carefully. Eventually the Candida spores can and will be totally eradicated and your natural yeast balance restored. You will feel like a new woman, I promise.

A GP that specialises in the treatment of bacterial yeast overgrowths is a chap called Brendan Fitzpatrick and his surgery is on Morehampton Road, very close to Madigan's pub in Donnybrook, Dublin 4. I don't have the number but you'll find it in the book. An appointment with him might be beneficial to you.

    Best of luck.

P.S - when I said earlier that Acidophilus was no use I meant it is no use unless it is kept refridgerated. If left at room temperature it dies very quickly and hence is no use.

Don't mean to be curt but this all sounds like a classic case of Candida.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

yeah, i was reading about it recently, and i'd be inclined to agree in this case.

it's amazing to me to find out how common candida is, considering how little is known and how ill informed doctors can be with regard to it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the recent posts, but it sounds as if some are discussing WHETHER Fed Up's problem is thrush OR candida, when "thrush" is just the common layperson's term for candida (candida albicans...or C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata or C. guilliermondii, depending on strain).

It's all basically the same thing. I suppose, a systemic case could be more complicated and needs more medical oversight, perhaps. But Mojo's advice sounds good for that (NO sugar, low carbs to starve it).

I wish Fed Up would give a report back to let us know if any suggestions have helped.

Here are two sites that looked helpful too. Limiting search to "thrush" comes up with more "pop" type sites. Proper name for the most common type of thrush (or "yeast infection") is candida albicans. All the same thing.

    http://www.dermnetnz.org/pre/dna.fungi/candida.html
    http://www.curezone.com/diseases/candida/

Note: while it's unlikely, it may be good to understand that thrush is an "opportunistic" condition which can be a symptom of an underlying problem. With the other symptoms Fed Up reports, she should see the doctor Mojo recommended and have a thorough check out (and tell him about the persistent thrush).

    Good luck.

Zombie thread ahoy. OK a 7 week old child with what you suspect has contracted thrush needs to go to a doctor. No other option. End of. Locking this thread.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
