Post all your accommodation questions and comments here. For first years, there are five main student complexes where Mary I students stay, depending on price, availability, distance from college, and oddly enough, gender. Please note that these are only opinions of individual posters, and these opinions vary. It’s not an endorsement or otherwise of any of the respective accommodation options. Also be aware that prices may have changed since these comments were made.

If you wish to let people know about a spare room/ sharing options, do not post your phone number or email address. Keep contact to private messages.

See Student Union advice on accommodation here.

Check out the Mary I accommodation page for a list of private residential accommodation that has been advertised with students in mind. Be aware that some landlords/landladies will only want female occupants or final years/postgrads. Because Mary I has such an unusual gender balance they can be picky. Some of the main estates include:
    -Castlewell
-Alandale (incl. Alandale Hall, Alandale Close, Alandale, Larchfield, Thornfield)
    -Fitzhaven

    Hi there,

Just wondering when would it be a good time to start looking for accommodation? I'm pretty sure I want to stay at Courtbrack.

How far is the college from the city by walking/bus?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 2,497 Mod ✭✭✭✭dambarude

If you want to go to Courtbrack you should book it as soon as possible. There are usually waiting lists as far as I know.

You can walk from the college main gate into the city in 10/15 minutes.

Not sure about the accommodation but Im sure you can never be too soon.

As for distance, it's about 15-20 minutes to city centre proper.

About 5-10 minutes by bus, the 304.

It's probably long booked out, you need to get on that waiting list asap.

I just finished my first year in Mary I and I stayed in Courtbrack Accomodation. To sum up my reaction to it; I hated it. Having to be stared down by your fellow Courtbrackers while cooking, not having the privacy of watching whatever you wanted on TV, having to sign people in 2 days in advance and getting refused if youre a day late. Ofcourse I did make some amazing friends in there as I was lucky enough to be in a corridor of girls whom I got on fantastically with, but to say the least, we couldnt wait to get our asses out of there and into a house that was just for us!
Ofcourse, some people did love it. I dont know if it was because I just wasnt bothered to make the effort of getting to know 80 people or simply that they didnt like me! There were, as you call, various "cliques" in the first semester but by second semester there was one huge gang of friends with the odd smaller groups of friends.
However, at the end of the year it did feel like we were a family when we held our "Courtbrack Awards" as we had gotten to know eachother reasonably well.
Overall, Courtbrack is a place for open people-person first years who might end up being the only one out of their home friends going to Mary I. If you dont mind having a tiny shelf in the fridge, waiting for a cooker, having to watch something else while your favourite show is on because someone was in the sitting room first, then maybe it is the place for you!
The staff were EXTREMEMLY nice in there and very helpful. Just hope you dont end up in the F block where you will have to walk ALL the way to the front entrance to get out! :p

I forgot to mention where I would recommend!

Ashdown is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and is just across the road from the college. Its also great craic and seems easy to make friends there. The one downside is you could end up living with someone you mightn't get on with but thats the case anywhere I suppose.

City Campus is heaven in terms of college accomodation. Its modern, again great for houseparties (infact possibly the best place for houseparties in Mary I!) and really close to the city! The downside? Seems like AAAGES away from the college. Whenever I walked there from Courtbrack which is right beside the college, it took me around 20mins which was no fun, so I cant imagine what it must have been like walking there everyday for lectures. Still, a load of my friends are living there again this year so it must have been worth it!

I wouldnt stay in the RES block if you paid me. I havent been in there myself but apparently its very drab and not nice and cosy. From this year, it was full of girls who didnt drink and didnt really socialise with anyone in the other accomodations. I dont know, I just didnt like the sound of it so just sayin'!

Hope this was helpful :) I know I'm posting late but maybe for future years it'll be handy!

    Hi,

I am hoping to apply to the Post Grad in Primary Teaching in Mary Immaculate for the year 2013/2014. As it does not start until January, I was wondering if the accomodation process is different?

Also, a lot of the time is spent away from the college on Teaching Practice so is it possible to stay somewhere that one only pays for the weeks they are there?

    Thank you :)

Thank you!! :) well atm I've Education + Physcology down on the CAO as #1 but realistically it's *hopefully* going to be the normal Primary Teaching course. I've only the combined one #1 because of the options it would bring but honestly I don't think I'll get the points unless the correctors are drunk while doing mine and decide to give me a few a1's just because of my writing :P plus I hear the work load is crazy and they're changing the course which I have heard is gonna be killer. Actually I got a letter today about the course changes but I looked on the website earlier and nothing was there. No biggie I'll look tomorrow again!

But yeah the normal education degree would be unreal...I've had my eyes set on Primary Teaching since I was like 12 so it'd be a dream I guess haha

I don't know what it is, but nearly everyone who has asked a question on this forum has been looking to do the B.Ed Psych. Seems to attract the high achievers or the crazy people, you can decide which you are yourself :p . Glad the college has sent out letters about it.

I seem to be getting ever closer to understanding myself - just one more breakthrough needed!:p It's interesting that word of the B.Ed & Psychology course is spreading and that the number of applicants is growing. Kudos to the college for keeping information flowing from headquarters!:)

It's also great to hear someone like TheComeUp with a long-term passion for teaching on the right road to reaching their goal! Best of luck to you, good sir!;)

Hi, just a question - we live minutes from Mary I would students be interested in renting rooms in a house that the owner lives in? I have 3 spare bedrooms & a nice spacious house. The house next to me is always rented out to students & we've always got on great with them, but I suppose living independently would be what students prefer? I was thinking of putting these rooms up for rent & would love some feedback ??? :)

Definitely put it on offer, many mature students/ postgrads, and even undergrads, would be happy to live in an owner occupied house. You wouldn't be the only one to do this. Contact the college re: getting your name put on the accommodation list.

thanks for that, I will get in touch with Mary I & get on the list. Is there any place on Boards that I can put details up about the house?

Yes you can book for shorter periods of time at City Campus. Also they will have a block which is specifically for 3rd year students and mature students. I think they may also have a bus running from the Campus to the college over the winter months

I started the postgrad in January and the majority of my course moved into City Campus as they normally keep 1 block free for Grad Dip and mature students. Was grand for the Feb-May period and by then you'll know people to move into other places come Sept. You can be lucky to find places around Mary I too if you look on sites like Daft.ie and in the college itself, students can advertise free rooms. With regards to Teaching Practice, the first 3 are normally placed in Limerick itself so you'll still need accommodation for those weeks. There is an option to complete some of these at home but apparently you need a number of people to be based in the same area for it to be accepted.

Does anyone know why the Ashdown website has gone all private and stuff? You can't view any of the pictures anymore or anything.

If I don't get accommodation on campus, do many house take first years? If not what are my options?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 2,497 Mod ✭✭✭✭dambarude

I lived in a house in first year! Plenty of first years do. But you'd want to get on to it pretty sharpish - the place will be swarming with students looking for houses on Monday. Some will have secured accommodation after getting their LC results.

I've booked to stay in the Res block... could someone give me some more information about it? Is it really as bad as people are saying?! :/ I've seen the rooms etc, just worried about it not being a very "social" place to stay?

I wouldn't worry about it. The people I know who lived there really enjoyed it. I know some people who stayed more than one year! The cooking/residential facilities aren't great, but the company more than makes up for it.

It must be very unusual to be sleeping one floor about your lecturer's office, in a room the same size!

i booked this on Results Day but I'm not sure what it's like either, I know its further from the college than Courtbrack but Ashdown seems to be booked up..

An awful lot of people live in City Campus. It's about a 20 minute walk as far as I know. You'd see streams of people moving between CC and the college on the hour, coming and going for lectures. It involves apartments with 3/4 bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Most people I know who lived there liked it, but it wouldn't be as convenient as the likes of Ashdown. It's very close to the bus/train station though, which is a consolation.

Hey so now I've accepted the offer, what's the story with accommodation? I've paid a deposit on Ashdown but now what? Will they be notified by Mary I or what will happen?

I lived in city campus last year and I loved it. They are all 4 bed apartments with 2 bathrooms. It's a bit of a trek to college alright especially on wet mornings, but you get over that. It's a fantastic place to get to know people! Brilliant for parties too :P
