    Hi blockic,
This years course will be different to last years and we are currently in the process of picking a new course. We will post the profile of the new course here as soon as we have it finalized.

16th June, in case anyone was wondering. Might give it a lash of the new route is relatively flat.

Might have a go at this myself once I see the route. Any idea when it'll be finalised?

Hi Krusty Clown & Gavlor, i'm sorry about the delay with the course. We hope to get as flat a course as possible but we also want to take traffic flow etc into consideration and as we are helping a club colleague organising the 'Slieve Bloom' half marathon & 10k this Sunday it will probably be towards the end of next week before there is any decision made. Thanks for showing interest in our race and we hope to be seeing you on June 16th.

Great event last year, fantastic community spirit and involvement and the course was fair enough, if the new course is flatter it will be quite fast as there were only 39m of climb last year!

    Here's last year's course:

although I do realise it's different this year.

After a lot of thought and reconnaissance we have designed what we regard as a substantially flat course overall with a total vertical climb over the 10km course of a modest 25 meters. The course begins and ends at almost identical locations in the Square, Abbeyleix. Even though the Map My Run Excel data sheet yields a net fall of 4 meters, you can disregard this as we have optimised the route to finish on the square within yards of the start. There is therefore no net fall and any difference is negligible giving an almost perfect loop. The course is therefore ideal for anyone wishing to try his hand at running a PB or fast time either way. This 10k race will be more than worth your consideration. Please enter on either Run Ireland or Precision Timing.. We will update on progress and any questions we will be happy to answer..

Only thing i would say is have a marshall at the start line this year. Last year it was myself ( MC ) and the timing chip guy who had to get the race ready for the off. No one from the club were there at all.

It was a great day and well organised other than that small gripe, i'd recommend it !!!!

    Hi Elvis
There was a valid reason for the 5 minute delay getting the race started. A couple of months earlier lots of us ran in the Streets of Portlaoise 5k and the Timing chips completely failed. Everybody was left without an official time. We did not want to totally rely on the chip and wanted the back-up of our own manual timing. We are doing a Get fit for Summer challenge at the moment with over 200 in the races and we always have more than enough officials at the start and finish. The problem was the guy with the watch was missing for a couple of minutes and I personally held up the race until he came. There were other club members at the start. It wasn't an issue however I take your point...

The route differs from that previously noted but the below will clarify everything.
We had to change it in the interest of optimizing the safety of the course. It is a fast course with long straight stretches of unhindered running through lovely rural country roads..

The attached map will introduce you to course map and elevation profile for next Sunday's Heart of Laois 10k. The route differs from last years as this year it will head out from Abbeyleix in the direction of Ballyroan and you will run through some timeless rural byways as you head back to Abbeyleix. The course profile is as flat as the local geography allowed us and it is a very enjoyable and runnable course that has the potential to be fast. The toughest part of the course is the last 2k and by this stage you should all going well, be set for a great finishing time if that is your goal. The profile below will give you all the gradients with the total vertical climb being a modest 33 metres.. We wish you well as the week progresses and make sure to rest well and keep hydrated for best performance.. See you on Sunday, we are excited in anticipation of a great day...

Hats off to eon1208 and the club for putting on a really top-notch show. Started bang on time, course a perfect length and a decent competitive field. It was a warm humid day and that, combined with the rolling hills, showed up my lack of current fitness. Great race, very friendly welcome and love the technical top. Might be worth running it in reverse next year, so you get the single climb a little earlier in the race (and an even gentler climb)?
