Dun Laoghaire now offering membership with no hello money according to the Irish Times yesterday 3rd April so it can be put on this thread. They have created a new category with no hello money but the potential member had to be over 63 years old, so I am not sure if this is the category that can join with no joining fee.

Corrstown is missing from the lists, they also have a family membership which can be taken out by 2 adults for the price of 1.6 of a full membershop, so get two subs for about 2k plus bar levy/gui etc. It covers brothers/in-laws etc from what the office told me.

For some reason, Corrstown stopped publishing membership rates on their website and are requesting people to phone them for information.

This makes it very difficult to keep up to date with their rates.

The original idea of the list was to make it as easy as possible for potential new members to compare rates. Making rates as transparent as possible benefits customers in the long run as it encourages competition among clubs to provide best value for money.

The old days of limiting the availability of rates meant that consumers (i.e. golfers), whose time for shopping around is limited, couldn't easily compare rates and restricted the choice set of new clubs. This didn't matter so much in the Celtic Tiger and led to inefficiency, poor cost control, overspending and unnecessarily high membership rates.

In these more difficult economic times, clubs need to be more conscious of providing a good level of service offering for prices that people can afford. The clubs put the customer first as regards value for money deserve to survive, as the days of just hiking up prices and levying existing members are fast drawing to a close.

Sorry but I'm not sure what the 4th and 5th paragraph had to do with Corrstown missing off the list, but their rate hasn't change, still 1229 plus 150 bar levy plus GUI.

But I'll mention it to the committee that the rates should be available on the site and I accept you're point, but I guess the reason its not publish is due to it been a different rate depending on what time of year you joined which is designed to benefit the consumer in this case.

By the way, high membership rates were more due to market demand and people not demanding better value for there euro. But you are correct about the waste during that period, but that was the Celtic Tiger for most people. Not all clubs behaved in that manner and some re-invested the high subs they got during that period back into the business, similar to any business during that period.

You can have the same arguement about golf equipment, people feel they have to spend silly money on new drivers that are made for a fraction of the selling price and people are still spending money on equipment. I look at a pair of Ecco shows on Thurday and was told the guarantee with them was a year, I told the manager that was a disgrace for a €200 product. But people still buy them. Anyway, we are gettting off the point.

I don't disagree with most of what you've said and have nothing against any club, including Corrstown.

My point is that potential customers need to have easy access to club membership rates to make their buy decisions as easy as possible. As I see it, not publishing rates is putting a barrier in the way of some peoples' decision making process.

I'm quite sure clubs can find a solution to this issue, even if they have variable rates. Other businesses have done this but some golf clubs, for various reasons, have shown signs of being slow to adapt to changing market circumstances.

In the battle for survival, clubs need to avoid the old route of higher than necessary prices. Therefore, the sooner they make it as easy as possible for new members to join and existing members to stay, the better for both clubs and members.

Check List when joining a golf club (re finances and management):

    - Always advisable to ask for a copy of a club's latest audited accounts (but this only tells you how they performed for the last 2 years and things could have changed quickly this year).

    - Ask how many members the club lost this year (and how this compares with their budget plan for the year - also ask for copy of budget for 2012).

    - If the club lost a significant number, ask what new action is being taken to balance their budget for this year (through cost cuts, outsourcing, marketing initiatives, etc.).

    - Ask what actions have been taken in last 2 years to reduce their cost base and increase revenue.

    - You are taking a bigger risk than necessary, if the club is doing nothing other than reacting to events (they should have provided for some membership losses and cost reductions in their budget).

    - Reduce your risk by paying in monthly installments.

Just a small point but if you are prepared to pay €5-€10 you can go on to the CRO website and get the filed financial statements for the last couple of years.

No not great, their yearly membership is €2,000 + VAT so with nearly half the year gone you've effectively getting it prorated. Granted you still have the height of the summer season to play so there's advantages there.
Would love to join Luttrellstown, think it's one of the best parklands in Dublin (have yet to play Dun Laoghaire) with great practice facilities but can't justify the nearly €2,200 yearly subscription.
Another concern I'd have is that it only has about 100 members which is not enough for a viable club and good turnout in weekend and interclub competitions etc. The club has had issues about 4 years ago when all members were told the club was closing and they were forced to move to Castleknock, The Hermitage and some as far as Killeen Castle. If they were to reduce their yearly membership to €1,500 I think they'd seriously increase their membership base and I for one would have to seriously consider it.

In fairness, if the club owns the land then 2,000 plus is a bit rich. But on the other hand what do you expect for this money?

I use a local gym which is a stuffy room with a few weights and machines and they charge 400 per year. Also they are subsidised by the local authority.

So for access to a full golf course, play as often as you want etc I dont think 2,000 is totally off the wall.

If you use the course say 40 times a year that's 50 Euros per round - not bad when you consider the social side of the club that's also involved. Throw in practise facilities ( if the club has them ), and you've saved upwards of 500 per year ( 10 per week visit to the range ). Bring a few pals out for a round, even better....

It's the outrageous entrance fees that these clubs charged at the height of the Celtic Tiger blahdy blah that used to get my goat.

Even during peak season the weekend green fee is €45 and that's per their website so you may even get cheaper if you call and haggle.

While I understand your point about the social aspect, I dont think a fully paid up member should have to pay the same sort of prices as a visitor.

They would need 2k with those small numbersto run the place properly I reckon.
maintenance of courses hasn't gotten much cheaper while income has dropped significantly.

But would Luttrellstown be doing very well on green fees versus most other courses ?

It is looking like the numbers don't add up for golf courses.

For some one to pay 2 K they need to play about 60 games per year, You can get most courses at this level for 35 euro . That mean you need to play 60 games a year. I'm not sure there are that many who will play 60 times a year ?

The 2k is a entry fee to keep certain type of people out, there currently not interest in having 100's of members. Remember when this course was sold 5 years ago it was meant to be developed into the next K club etc and I'm sure the current owners who have plenty of cash our just waiting for the market to turn around again. This course is a business and I'm guessing not really interest in the views of members or if it is, they only want people who have plenty of cash and don't play much and like to say there a member of a elite club.

    Fair enough,

But it can't be considered elite now ?, if it is on tee times every day of the week, is a regular on the society circuit, fairways were poor when I was there.

I think they are looking at the pay per play and society money as the future of golf. That is what they are doing at moment.

It would be a long, long shot that the market is going to turn around.
