The Haringey Boxing Club stage their annual Box Cup event at Alexandra Palace in North London this weekend where a strong Munster Select team represents Ireland in both men's and women's events.

World 60kg champion Katie Taylor 'guests' for the Munster select team as does Kelly Harrington. Waterford's young "star of the future" Katy Bible had a good win on Friday and tomorrow meets Naomi Olenski of Amsterdam in the Female B 71kg final. Katie Taylor comes up against an 'old' adversary in Switzerland's Sandra Brugger and if she wins that is more than likely to meet Australian, Claire Gabriel in Sunday's final. Gabriel won the Prime Ministry Gold in Ankara when Taylor had to withdrtaw from the final due to a shoulder injury.

Barry Barnes and Rory O'Donoghue had early wins in the mens events and many more Munster Select boxers appear on Saturday and Sunday. Bouts start at 12 noon both days and for Board.ie members in the Greater London area just turn up and pay £10 on the door (adults) and £5 (U-16). Should be a great weekend with more than 350 entries over the 3 days

    Alexandra Palace, Saturday

Katie Taylor advanced to tomorrow's final of the Haringey Box Cup tournament with a convincing 29-7, 26-7,18-4 unanimous points win over Sandra Brugger of Switzerland before a large attendance (inc many Irish residents and visitors ) at the Alexandra Palace in North London this (Saturday) afternoon.

As in their previous contests including the 2007 European Championship final, the Basel boxer fought a gallant fight but was always fighting a losing battle against Taylor.Interestingly the tournament was not judged by the computerised scoring method but the Judges were in no doubt as to Taylor's superiority.

In tomorrow's 60 kg final, the Irish champion meets Ingrid Marie Egner, the 28 years old champion of Norway who first met Taylor as long ago as 2004 at the Norway Box Cup final in Oslo when the then 18yrs old Taylor won convincingly on a 36-20 scoreline.

    More tomorrow

Katie Taylor struck Gold for Ireland in the 60kg final of the Haringey International Box Cup here at Alexandra Palace this afternoon, against Norway's Ingrid Marie Egner.

Another fine Irish victor was Ryston's Dervla Duffy in the Female A Class final with an 'all action' win against Ellis Booth of Portsmouth University.

    Fuller details later tonight

    Update:

Katie won on a majority 2-1 judges decision but although Ingrid Egber fought very hard indeed and improved considerably on past form, how the Norwegian judge felt she won is a mystery to all those neutrals who were at Alexandra Palace today.

In addition to being presented with Box Cup Gold medal at 60kg, Ms Taylor was also voted Female boxer of the tournament .
