Meant to post up these sometime back but haven't had a chance. Its really great to see the way the game has developed in the province (contrary to what some people have said/posted). The Development Cup has teams in areas not tradionally known for playing rugby:

    Development Cup Draw

St Muridec's Ballina V Holy Rosary Mountbellew

CBS Roscommon V St Jarlath's Castlebar

Clifden Community School V St Pauls Oughterard

"The Jes" v St Marys Ballygar

    Carraroe V Gallen Community School

    Mercy Headford V Garbally College

Marist College V St Rapheals Loughrea

St Endas V Athlone Community College

    Junior Cup Draw

Rice College Westport V St Jarlaths Castlebar

    Summerhill Sligo V "The Bish"

    Sligo Grammar V Calasanctius Oranmore

Dev Cup Winners V Dev Cup Runners Up

There will be no extra time in the event of any draws, a reply will be played and the Senior/Junior Schools Cup finals are set to be played on Wednesday March 14th

used to go to Garbally, was on the squad for the last JC win, sad to see us in the development cup these days but the loss of the boarding school hit us hard and the rebuild has taken a while.

do you know how the development cup draw goes after the first round

also nice to see so many schools in it, shows how the game is developing:D

Calasanctus v Marist and Sligo Jes are two that will provide a lot of drama, probably the 4 strongest teams in the group

wonder how the alma mater will get on, had some horrific draws in recent times

has the irish times done the yearly cup previews yet?

Played with Calasanctius for a number of years and did a bit of coaching up there, great set up this year and should be capable to take on the Jes and Sligo Grammer. Sean O'Brien and Paul O'Donnell are now on the Irish school and club youths teams and there is a few Connacht u18 lads there. They have a great junior cup record but never really progressed in the senior cup. hopefully this year will change things. Overall there is some really good match-ups in the junior and senior competitions.

When are these played? Is there a big interest in them? Wouldn't mind watching some of these matches. Quite like the pace of the rugby.

Bad week for the Galway city based schools as Marist beat Calasanctius last Tuesday 23-10 which to be honest wasn't a true reflection of the match. I helped coach the Junior side so may appear biased. Although Marist were the stronger side (they had a panel of 49 players to work with) whereas the Oranmore school would have well less than 30 players. Some very strange referring decisions in the game including during play the ref blew the whistle Marist continued to play while the Calasanctius players began to stop, he suddenly started running after the Marist backs and play continued. At this realisation Calasanctius scrambled defence was in array and they conceeded a penalty which lead directly to a try.

In the Junior Cup, Sligo Grammar beat Calasanctius 11-5 in a very close game in dreadful pitch conditions and again some dreadful referring decisions. Trailing 8-0 early in the second half Grammar were under a lot of pressure and defending inside their own 22 when the Oranmore side were awarded a penalty which the scrum half took quickly and burst towards the line. He was grabbed just on the line but crossed and touched the ball down in clear view but the referee awarded a 5M scrum to Oranmore???? although he never lost control of the ball.

The intense pressure continued and although it appeared the ball was grounded again, after two penalties, the ref decided to go back for a penalty he had awarded but had played the advantage. The conversion was narrowly wide but there was just 6mins left at this stage and Grammar held onto the lead.

Last four draws for Senior & Junior Cups, too many of the same schools in both for my liking..
The quarter finals of both the Supermacs Connacht Schools Senior and Junior Cups have been completed with semi final set to take place over the next two weeks with dates and times still to be confirmed.

In the Senior Cup semi finals, Rice College Westport will be making their first appearance at this stage of the competition after edging out a strong Clifden Community School in the last eight. The Mayo school will host League winners Marist College Athlone who overcame Calasanctius Oranmore in the Quarter finals.

Roscommon beat the Bish and the Jes on the way to the final where they lost to Marist College Athlone.

Sligo Grammar defeated Colaiste Iognaid 11-3 to book a home semi final with Garbally college who were comfortably winners over St Joesph’s College Galway. In this case, the home side will be strong favourites but the Ballinasloe school are making great progress and can’t be discounted.

The Junior Cup semi finals see holders Rice College Westport host St Joseph’s Galway (the bish) in the last four while Sligo Grammar will square up against Development Cup winners Marist College Athlone in the other semi final.

    Fixtures

Senior Cup semi Finals (Week of Feb 6)
    Rice College v Marist College
    Sligo Grammar v Garbally College

Junior Cup Semi Finals (Week of Feb 13)
Rice College v St Joseph’s Galway (The Bish)
    Sligo Grammar v Marist College

Hasn't my old haunt come on in the world! In my time in Calasanctius College i begged the school authorities for years to set up a Rugby team in the school. I always saw huge potential in the school, it had the right mixture of lads that played for a few of the clubs in Galway and these huge GAA guys that would take to rugby like a duck to water. Finally in the year 2000 (my leaving cert year) we got our team and started training in the Castle road pitch, then a GAA pitch, now a rugby pitch. We lost most out games that year but we got the ball rolling and had a great laugh. its good to hear that we've come on a bit from them. hard luck with the results this year. Matter of time before Oranmore are a dominant force in Connacht. Hopefully the school will be known for more than just basketball.

    A bit of an update.

Was at the senior game. Marist college looked like they were cruising the whole game. Despite the Grammar missing 3 very kickable penalties. Marist were Different Gravy!

Grammar had absolutely no idea what to do when they had the football, and the Marist were so comfortable in defence, and never kicked the ball away. They ran it out from the own line the whole time. They were always looking for the offload and trying to keep it alive.

Marist pack been alot smaller, also got on top of the Grammar boys.
Also there was 1 or 2 players on each side who I heard about and who I expected to be a lot better than they were that disappointed me.

But its been 35 years since we won the Schools Cup and we'll take it! Come on the Marist!

Managed to see both games and in fairness some very good rugby at times in both games. However when the draw was made it was pointed out that March 14th had to be adhered to as Setanta were going to film and show the games. Now I could be very wrong but I didn't see any TV cameras at the game and if that is the case it just goes to show once again how shoddy Connacht rugby is treated. Then again although there were no Galway teams in either final none of the local free rags bothered to even say a SINGLE line about the biggest day in schools rugby taking place in Galway!!!

The junior final looked like Grammar were going to run away with it in the first half with Rice looking like they had very little apart from some threat from their lively backline.....when they got the ball. Thought the pack was a let down for them and were very slow getting to the breakdown causing a lot of good work overturned and losing a lot of ball. However, in fairness to Rice they hung in there and kept fighting and in the second half brought it back to level pegging. Even with a huge amount of possession Rice couldn't/didn't use it to any effect. However, I must say it was disheartening to see a Junior side so cynical in their approach to the game. At EVERY opportunity they killed the ball or killed the game and sometimes both. I watched when players went down looking for attention and I didn't see anyone get ANY treatment, ice, spray or rub just a drink of water.

Senior final had a great first half with Marist looking by far the stronger team and looking way sharper. Don't think they were smaller than the Grammar pack but worked very well. Very disappointed in Grammar captain Thomas Ferrari who I thought didn't even work that well and did more decoy running than actually taking on the opposition. Couple of Grammar players stood out including the No 6. Most of Marist side were very impressive and well drilled especially Robbie Henshaw and the Marist full back. Great to see a back line LOOKING to take the ball into contact. However, even with far more possession in the second half I honestly thought Grammar never really offered any threat. Congrats to Marist

Junior Cup final replay took place and in a surprise result Rice College Westport beat Sligo Grammar. Didn't get to see the game myself but it was 6-3 to Rice and a lot of the game came down to discipline. Reliable source told me the ref was very unfair to Sligo but considering their negativity in the first game, it seems that they didn't get away with any of that kind of carry on in this game.

Calasanctius College won the Senior City Cup today 17-11 after beating St Joseph's College "The Bish". The Bish had a very strong first half kicking two penalties and going over for a try but Calasanctius had a very strong second scoring 3 tries one of which was converted.

Calasantius also face the Bish in the Junior City Cup after the Easter break.
