Hi all, hopefully this is an easy one...

Say one required a letter from company A verifying past employment details (start date and end date) but said company were ignoring all such requests, is there a way one could compel this company to provide such information?

You could make a formal request under the Data Protection Act which would compel the company to release to you all information on you which they are holding, which generally includes employment dates, amounts paid and so forth. Such requests can incur a small fee.

You may also be able to get a copy of your P60 or other tax statement from Revenue, which should include the name of your employer(s) during a tax year.

The company is not legally obliged to offer references or otherwise verify details to a 3rd party.

    Thanks Seamus.

Let's say in this case it's not a reference but a requirement for a citizenship application to have this data from the company.

I guess that would not change anything and an FOI request would be the best way forward.

Edit: Does FOI cover a private company?

If you ring the revenue office they can give you date's of employments. the number is 1890444425.

Generally no. You want to use the Data Protection Act, not the FOI Act.

FOI Act is mostly about getting information from government.

A friend of mine had the same situation with his former employer.
Former employer refused to verify anything.

To verify that he had worked for said company, my friend provided copies of his bank statement showing payments in to his bank account from said former employer as proof!
