Pegs for soft ground?

A recent trip in our "wonderful" commercial forestry landscape showed up how woeful standard aluminium pegs are for pegging out the tarp. The ground was way too soft and any decent breeze just pulled them out. I ended up having to tie them off to various bits of branches and deadfall.

Has any got a reasonably lightweight alternative that they would recommend?

I just use extra long stakes made of deadwood .

Sand/snow pegs should do it.

They get good reviews alright.

These also get excellent reviews but they're not lightweight, at nearly 500g. I suppose that you could cut the number carried in order to reduce weight.

A decent price though!

On another related subject, any recommendations for carabiners etc. to speed up the pitch time for tarp and hammock set ups?

I use both of these, as it happens. I'm a big fan of MSR gear in general, and bought a set of these to go with my MSR tent a few years back. They're light as a feather but sturdy as hell, and I've found these pegs are excellent on dense sand, however on anything softer, they do tend to pull through the ground if there's a wind tugging at the tent.

The snow stakes I use are similar enough to the ones linked above to comment - I use them (funnily enough) on snow, dry sand and soft bog, and they hold extremely well, even in pretty gusty conditions. Only thing I will say though is take it easy pushing them in - I've frayed/cut a few guy-ropes in the past from over-enthusiastically ramming them home.

Just my experiences with them, for what it's worth.
