Issues teaching maths in the US and comparison with Japan

    I found this fascinating, particularly the comment that Japanese teachers were successfully applying methods developed in America that America was failing to implement effectively, mainly due lack of support as programs were rolled out. The massive focus on communication between teachers and ongoing continuing professional development was interesting too, plus the whole idea of getting children to talk about the problems they were trying to solve. There's a focus on the basics I guess - this seems to focus on what I'd consider primary level issues, specifically arithmetic operations.

    But it's interesting...
