i work in a creche and we were warned today that secret video footage from a number of creches is to be aired on primetime on monday night.

We have been told that the creches involved are:
giraffe,
[mod snip - only Giraffe has been named in the press]

Apparently there will be some really upsetting things shown and there will be a backlash based on it.

We only know about it as it has been leaked.

This is the only article i can find so far....
GARDAI and the HSE are investigating allegations of poor quality of care at a south Dublin creche.

Two members of staff have been suspended at the Giraffe creche in Stepaside.

The probe is based on footage secretly filmed at the Giraffe creche by a TV researcher posing as a care worker.

It allegedly shows substandard practice and quality of care.

The Herald understands that RTE’s Prime Time programme plans to broadcast an expose on standards of care at more than one creche in Dublin.

The HSE’s Children and Family Services unit has confirmed to the Herald that the creche, is under investigation. “We received a report yesterday regarding the independent childcare facility in south Dublin.

“The HSE Children and Family services are working with An Garda Siochana to review the report and make an assessment with respect to any child welfare and protection concerns,” a HSE spokesperson said.

Gardai confirmed that they are making inquiries into allegations about two creches, one on Dublin’s northside, which the Herald understands is not a Giraffe centre, and another on the southside.

A statement issued on behalf of Giraffe confirmed it is examining a complaint that was brought to the attention of the HSE in late April by an ex-employee.

Complaint

“We are taking this complain very seriously,” said a Giraffe spokesperson.

“As a precautionary measure, we have suspended the two members of staff named in the complaint while we examine the matter and establish the facts,” they added.

Giraffe raised concerns that the complaints had been filed by an RTE researcher working undercover as an employee, who had “purported to be an edu-carer”.

“Last Sunday evening, we discovered that the researcher had also secretly filmed while she was in the centre, but did not supply the footage to the HSE or to Giraffe.

“We have made numerous requests for the footage over the past two days so that we can review and assess the situation, and we still have not received the material.

If Sony and Microsoft release both of their new machines later this year how will you decided which machine to get? For the sake of discussion lets just say that they will be released this year.

Will it be brand loyalty? You've bought into the MS Live eco system or PSN and don't want to switch? Will it be the hardware specs of the machine or the launch line up of games? Will it be backwards compatibility? Price?

For me right now I have no idea which I would choose. In this current generation I bought all three (Wii, PS3, 360). I don't think brand loyalty will be a factor for me. In the end I will probably end up with both so I will just have to decide which one first. One important factor will be what Naughty Dog has lined up for the PS4 (or whatever they call it).

I have been following this for a couple of hours as I am from South East London but now, they are saying it may be a terrorist incident. The dead man apparently was wearing a help the heroes T-shirt and is a soldier at the nearby army barracks.

My own thoughts:

Have always been reluctant when it comes to considering putting my children into a creche and have so far resisted.

To my mind, this is another example of how poorly we deal with certain vulnerable sections of our society. Our kids, our elderly etc.

At this stage, I would rather one of us stays at home full time to look after the little ones.

Firstly, the cost of creche services is huge, and secondly, this is the type of "care" the children receive. Sure, we'll have less money coming in, but I think it's probably worth it.

Am I over-reacting?

Hi, I am just wondering on peoples views on CP2. I'm in ASTI so we only got our ballots on Wed. TUI had already rejected it by then. I have voted no and am firmly in the no camp. I don't see how anyone can see it as being a good deal (as I have seen some people write on Facebook).
The increment that has been promised in 20 years time to NQTs is nothing more than a sop. Sure they couldn't even keep the agreement until next year which was meant to be the deadline!
If people don't mind how are ppl voting and what union are you in. I am worried ASTI won't have as strong as a no vote!

[Politics] Mattie Mcgrath accuses Shatter of being stopped by Gardai

Posted by Sully:

Mattie Mcgrath has just, in the Dail during leaders questions, accused Shatter of being stopped by Gardai before the election (late Feb / March 2011) in the period after the election and before he was appointed minister. Asked was the Tanaiste or Taoiseach aware that Minister Shatter was stopped at a Garda Checkpoint. He asked was he cautioned by a Garda, did they use their discretion, was he asked to provide a specimen of breath, and whether his behaviour and reaction to this event was appropriate and cordial, and whether he attempted to to use privilege of travelling to and from the Dail to avoid being breathalysed. He is asking for the Garda report to be given in relation to this incident in the public interest.

The question was posed to Rabbitte who is doing Leaders Questions today, and Rabbite denied any knowledge but outlined two such incidents where he personally was stopped (and passed the breath test). He said he had no knowledge, asked how would he and that he wouldn't know about any other TD. There was laughter in the chamber during the response.

Looks like its going to be tit-for-tat in the Dail. Dirty politics being played by everyone, including Shatter. It further proves that if you take a moral high ground on an issue in politics, the media or the opposition will dig and dig until they can trip you up. It happened with Ming, Wallace, and now Shatter. It will be very interesting to see how the Minister responds, and if he didn't provide a specimen of breath under the Dail privilege, his carrier is surely over.

So, it looks like Matthew Vaughn has decided to not return for the X-Men sequel 'Days Of Future Past'... and it now it looks like 20th Century Fox are eyeing up Bryan Singer to come back to direct.

While I enjoyed 'First Class' for the most part, it didn't hold a candle to the likes of X-Men and X2.. and the less said about X3 and Wolverine, the better.

But hey - Singer coming back can't be a bad thing... just look at the stunning job he done on the Superman franchise!
EXCLUSIVE: Matthew Vaughn has decided not to direct the sequel to 20th Century Fox‘s hit spinoff X-Men: First Class. Ready for the next shocker? Atop the studio’s replacement short list is Bryan Singer, who launched the X-Men feature franchise with the first two superb films and who has been a guiding influence in this spinoff by writing the treatment and producing. If this works out, Singer and Vaughn would essentially be switching roles. Vaughn, who wrote the treatment for the sequel for X-Men: Days Of Future Past that was scripted by Simon Kinberg, would step back to produce the film with Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.

[Aviation & Aircraft] Aer Lingus Late Night Arrivals at Dublin Airport

Posted by Ernest:

I had an unpleasant experience coming in to Dublin Airport about 1am in the morning on an Aer Lingus flight from Alicante (its the only time Aer Lingus fly in from there - unlike Ryanair who have more consumer-friendly timetables).
The plane landed (about fifteen minutes late) and we were disgorged by airbridge/ramp to a strange 1960s-like building where we had to go down a flight of stairs, which looked like one from the original terminal building. No lifts or escalators were available. No toilets were available either. We could see signs for Teminal 1 and Terminal 2 but all these doors were locked to us. From there we were forced along a very, very long grey windowless passageway with no clue to were we were. Nor were there any toilets! Eventually after a long long walk we seemed to arrive at a Passport Control queuing area where a single Garda at a window glanced at each passport before we were corralled further along a passageway when it became clear that we were now actually in Terminal 2.

It appears that the Aer Lingus airplane landed in Terminal 1 but we were forced to walk all the way over to Terminal 2 to get out of the airport.
No explanation. No Apology.

Is this a regular thing With Aer Lingus and DAA? If so I don't feel like travelling again with Aer Lingus from Alicante given that they do not have any flights on this route scheduled for more civilised hours of the day.

Hi Guys ... I'm a 20-30 a day smoker and have started using E-cigs to cut down (currently between 5-10) ie Jaspers & Jaspers and nicolites disposable but I'm going through them like a nicotine starved knife through butter. I've read some comments in relation to the pointlessness of purchasing e-cig rechargeable packs and the recommendation seems to be for a vaping device, trading the aesthetics of an e-cig (which I don't care about) for the value and "hit" of a vaper. My question is which is the best brand and best value? I smoke B&H and enjoy lots of smoke so the heavier output would be good! Thanks in advance for your help.
PS I'd very much appreciate direction to any discounts available at the minute you guys seem to be well on top of that sort of thing!

[Politics] Property Tax

Posted by RandomName2:

So here it is at last. The return of domestic rates.

Why so much fuss over one tax?

This tax is arguably an example of the worst type of governance: with Wookie Arguments (it's to pay for services), Underpants Gnome Economics (property >> ??? >>> capital), Faustian Pacts (if you give us a loan we'll cede the electorate's capacity to decide domestic taxation), and a process of site valuation, peremptory threats and legal empowerment of revenue officers that has quite unsettling historical parallels.

I've seen threads on water taxation, house taxation, hell even motor taxation that have fallen incurably foul of the Wookie argument (water taxation will help conserve water!). The meaninglessness of this argument has been made all too clear with Varadkar's acknowledgement that motor tax, which is nominally meant for road maintenance, has in reality little to do with road maintenance.

I appreciate the position that we need to make ends meet. But I have yet to see a convincing argument which legitimises the introduction of a stringing tax unconnected to one's ability to pay, which is likely to damage economic recovery, with certain spending policies currently in place. The property tax, when running at 100% efficiency (2014 budget), will only just cover our foreign aid budget.

Are people really arguing that increasing taxes is really preferable to addressing the €154m (Office of Taoiseach) and quarter of a billion euro (Arts, Heritage, Gaelteacht) spending?

I understand that people feel that such dissent is merely the case of saying "someone else's pocket, not mine". But as far as I can see it, it is just crazy, wrong headed policy. The fact that it's a different sort of wrong-headed craziness to that seen before does not make it any less so.

Can anyone prove me wrong?

Just setup the private boards Steam group named BoardsieSG

PM or reply with your steam ID in the form http://steamcommunity.com/id/* to get invited to it.

NOTE
I cant find some people so can you send the steam id in the form
http://steamcommunity.com/id/*

So what rules do people want for the private group?

Member longer than 3 months

50+ posts

You can then log in to SteamGifts.com and setup a raffle type draw and limit it to only the BoardsieSG group. This will be fair as it will allow a number of people the chance to get the code and not just the first to reply.

Also these draws can be setup so that only people who have contributed games will be allowed enter so this will stop people who only take, never give.

Once a draw is setup you can post the URL here to let people know about it. Here is how to link to a giveaway - use this code format:
While I still believe we are a relatively insecure people on average, I feel we are significantly less so than 2001.

Posted by SoapMcTavish:

Hi Guys,

What do I do if the owner of a vicious dog doesn't care about that dogs behaviour ?

I was walking my dog ( a soft friendly bichon ) tonight on the ballysimon road, and a dog latched onto her thigh. He was hiding behind a parked car. He wasn't huge, maybe a foot and a half tall - but he wouldn't let her go ... I kicked and punched him, and eventually picked him up by the scruff, he released my dog and started snapping at me. When I dropped him, he latched onto my foot - lucky I was wearing docs !

I dropped my dog home and called to the house that owns him, and the lady owners only answer was " what can I do ? He's never out. "

This particular dog has already bitten a disabled lad in the neighbourhood and that lads dad got no joy either.

No injuries suffered ( just a very upset doggy now here at home ). Amazed she hasn't visible injuries, maybe the thick fur saved her.

Anyway ... what now ?

All of the above surely mean that the steadying of the property market is completely superficial and it will nose dive again next year???? I think this time next year might be the right time to purchase? We are probably around 55% off peak prices now in Dublin would it be possible with no further incentive to buy that we will hit 70% by the end of 2013?????

I found the work very tedious and unfulfilling. I then went to Korea to teach English and when I got back i took up a dull admin job out of necessity. I would love to do medicine; I think I have the needed passion for it. I'm just wondering has anybody else done it coming from a similar background to me? I believe my technical and analytical skills should be helpful in exam and med degree and I’m pretty decent at humanities too. I’m just a bit concerned about my age I’ll be 30 next year, is this common? What’s the average age of 1st year GMED students? Also finances, how much would the 4 years cost? Are banks still giving out student loans to finance the 4 years? What are the job prospects? Would it be hospital work or do GMEDs work more in GPs? Are junior doctors still treated awfully in hospitals?

Hi I started cycling a bit last year on a trusty (ancient) mountain bike and it has served me well. But now I want to ramp up and participate in a longer cycling event where a local club are going to do the Ring of Kerry in May. I need a much lighter bike but no idea what I need to be looking for ? What sort of frame? Would a racing bike suit or a hybrid?

Would you mind giving me some very basic pointers? I want to be able to keep up instead of spinning my wheels as I was on the mountain bike, working hard but it hardly moving.

And any good retailers out there, either in Mayo or Dublin ? I need to get out training asap. Thanks so much
