Posted by bill buchanan:

I'm a doctor working in a children's ward in Africa at the minute. I had my flights paid for and a get a very small living allowance and somewhere to stay (with no electricity or running water) for a year.

We have so little on the ward and we could save a lot more lives with just a few quid. So it drives me nuts when i see people skydiving for charity or wakling the great wall of china for charity (as I was asked for money for recently) when a fraction of that money could buy some cheap antibiotics for our ward or some drips or clean dressings.

Voluntourism drives me nuts. If you're going to volunteer, be experienced enough to offer something useful, be willing to live frugally so you're not a drain on resources by being there and stay lnog enough to change something.

otherwise, just fundraise for others who are willing to do that.

You set you price around the average and more than likely well below. Then you need to add or subtract the relative costs i.e. If the car does / doesn't need NCT, tyres, tax etc. You can't sell a car these days based on what you think yourself its worth.
At least that's the way I'd approach it.

There is a 1.6 07 focus for sale in Tipperary, at 4700, with 80,000 miles. It is difficult to see why somebody would go to 5200 on similar car with 30,000 more miles.
The Censorship Board have banned several literary works since their inception in 1929, including Kate O'Brien's the Land of Spices, Eric Cross' The Tailor and Ansty and works by Seán O'Faoláin. Between 1929 and 1967 thanks to their members, there was serious intellectual stultification in this country.
Shatter's also responsible for appointing the CoPB. Dare its members invite the wrath of their paymaster?
Banning Shatter's "opus" is more likely to increase public interest. I say round up all the copies and pulp them instead, and make him eat the pulp!

Bit of further information on the LCI came through yesterday.

All LCI models will come with Xenon's and Business Navigation as standard. Along with SE and M-Sport, there is now a Luxury model - think there is also a Modern version, but don't have any info on that.

518d is coming, and will be a band A2 vehicle. No idea on price point, but should come in below the 520ED (which I don't have figures for either).

But the big benefit is that any 520's ordered now, for July / August delivery will get Automatic for Free. That means you can now buy a 520d Auto, with Nav and Xenon's, for July delivery, for less than the current model costs.

I'm a bit surprised really, cos I find that while Bet365 can sometimes be a bit shorter than other sites odds-wise (mainly compared to Betfair), they tend to make up for it by offering a broader range of markets.

Posted by CM24:

Just wondering, in your experience does lifting affect the recovery of your lower back much? I injured my lower back about two weeks ago doing a shoulder press. I arched my back too much on the last rep and felt something give out on the right side of my lower back. It flared up for a good few days after and I found myself having to lean on things while sitting up out of a chair, or walking up stairs etc. I actually fell to the ground after kicking a ball once. I'v been to the physio who said that whatever I did is causing a bad spasm. She gave me some stretches (mostly glute stretches)to do and it's slowly but surely recovering. I did one weight training session against her advice and I could feel the area sort of ''bulging'' a bit when doing rows or benching. Only worked up to one heavy-ish set on chins, rows, bench and OH press. Just wondering if I'm only prolonging the injury by doing weights? I'm guessing the physio doesn't even lift so she would naturally advise staying away from the weights. It drives me insane though, watching myself lose muscle and get fatter and not being able to do anything about it.

Afterwards get quotes from 2-3 places to fix whatever was failed, if anything.

That said you can avail of a free nct if you like, there's a few places that does them.
Just note that they will try to flog you tyres and other things you don't really need, Advanced pitstop are notorious for this too.
My advice is to do the free pre-nct but not have anything fixed until the real nct also have seen the car (unless it's lightbulbs).

If you can pre-empt a failure due to bulbs and tyres, I would prevent this happening.
I agree not to give it to a garage to do, but have a look yourself and have what you can correct first.
You know, the easy stuff like fluids, bulbs, good tyres, hub caps off, a spare wheel (where appliciple), seatbelts and horn working.
You shouldn't need a garage for that.

Posted by galwaytt:

Update on this, eventually got a quote for €407 from Aon Insure, and I was happy enough that and made payment, etc.

They duly sent out paperwork, and I scanned all the stuff they wanted, and emailed it to them today. Now, one thing I did scan and send, and which I'm sure I told the guy on the phone about, was my membership of IAM , but I just thought I'd send it 'just in case' and to save them asking again later.

Lo & behold the phone rang 10 minutes later and a very nice lady said because I'd sent in the IAM details, that there was a refund due ! WooHoo. Now, there was a snag: there was a €10 admin charge for it as the policy had already been put through, and when I queried how much the refund, to decide if it was worth the bother, I was very pleasantly told I would be getting back.......... € 80 !!

So, the nett cost of the insurance was actually €327. Win, win, win all day long Major tks to AON for having the nous to ring and tell me about it as well, they could just as easily have not !

Moral of the story. Keep shopping around, and assume nothing.

But also, training saves money - the IAM in this case. I have training and get discount on my bike insurance (also from AON) for the same reason, btw.......best €60 I ever spent - I must have recouped it 10 times over in the last 10 years.

Yes it was. He had no history of aggression as far as we were aware, he was under a year when we took him. He had lots of behavioral issues from the day we got him but we were happy to try work through them and take him to classes and train him.

We got him before we had children and we arnt the types to dump a dog because we had a baby. He had shown aggression to children before we had our own and we had been to a behaviorist to seek help.

We never called the rescue as we had no intention of giving up on a dog we had rescued, problematic as he was we loved him.

We managed for years to work around it as in fencing off half the garden so they were kept seperate. Bringing the dog in when the children were in school, at clubs, and in bed. It was very far from ideal but we managed. Im sure the dog seeing the kids come in and him go out didnt help his attitude towards them but his dislike of them drove us to that point.

If he so much as heard kids he would get very anxious and growl from the day we got him.

He had a happy life walked everyday and lots of play and attention his health ment he had to be put down in the end as although he was ment to be a lab he turned out to be a cross of collie and some tiny dog and as a result had a big body on tiny legs which destroyed his spine. To be fair to him this source of pain was probably a cause of his bad moods in the first place.

Im gonna post these just to help the thread get started. Got them from https://www.facebook.com/FitnessRecipes I think.

Banana pancakes (no flour)

1/2 banana
1 egg
butter for cooking
fruit/syrup/greek yoghurt for serving
pinch of cinnamon
(protein powder optional) 25 grammes
cocoa powder (optional) teaspoon full

Mash banana with egg, then stir in the powders and cinnamon.

Coat a pan with a thin layer of butter, medium heat and spoon the mixture, cook for a few minutes until it firms and goes golden brown, flip it over and cook the other side.
Serve with sliced fruit and greek yoghurt, or syrup (i like it with blueberries and greek yoghurt)

Sweet potato pancake

1 whole egg,
2 egg whites,
150g of cooked mashed sweet potato.
cinnamon to taste

beat the eggs and mix into the mash, add a pinch of cinnamon.

cook the same way as the banana ones, (roughl 2-3 mins each side) serve with fruit/syrup/greek yoghurt etc or bacon for a savory twist.

Edit, Ive been eating the banana ones for around a year, they work really well. The sweet potato ones popped up on my facebook yesterday so this thread seemed ideal place to post them. havent tried them yet, but will do soon.

Posted by The Woodcock:

Every tree over 10 years old is supposed to be protected under law and you need a felling licence to cut them down. If they are closer than 100ft to your house you can knock them without a licence.
However, I doubt if this law is enforced and leylandii hardly qualify as being of any significance, ecologically or otherwise. The authorities in this country should have more to be worrying about than policing tree-felling on private land.

Interesting discussion on the issue here: http://www.gardenplansireland.com/forum/about1220.html
